President of Zambia Hakainde Hichilema recently announced his quest towards abolishing the death penalty row. This announcement was made on the occasion of Africa Day. The statement receives several positive responses, including that of noted businessman and philanthropist Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani. Dr. Mahtani is one of the most successful businessmen from Zambia, with businesses across Zambia, Africa as well as international locations such as United Kingdom. Dr. Mahtani is also known for his philanthropic contributions, such as Prison Fellowship Zambia and Stephen Malama award and Scholarship for top law graduates in Zambia. Recently, Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani was awarded with one of the most prestigious corporate awards in Zambia. Forbes ‘Best of Africa’ awards are among the most honoured and respected corporate and leadership awards across entire Africa. The awards are presented to leading lights and visionaries who have made significant and long-term contributions towards philanthropy as a means to achieve long-term empowerment of the African nation. Dr. Rajan Mahtani was presented with this award for his significant philanthropic and charitable contributions to the Zambian nation and its people.  founded the Prison Fellowship Zambia for the welfare of the Zambian inmates. Prison Fellowship works towards providing welfare, transparent criminal justice, fundamental human dignity as well as human rights to the prisoners in Zambia. As such, Dr. Rajan Mahtani has said that his company Prison Fellowship will provide legal and regulatory support towards this decision.

While praising the statement made by the Zambian President, Dr. Mahtani stated that death penalty is cruel, inhumane and degrading and does not give any solution for the Zambian law and order. Furthermore, there is a growing awareness regarding abolishing this archaic law across the globe, a trend that can be observed across Zambia too. As such, past Presidents of Zambia have tactically avoided the death penalty row and only the current President Hakainde Hichilema rightfully took step towards abolishing this law from its core.
