President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, recently announced his plans to abolish the death penalty row. This quest by the current Zambian President was announced on the occasion of Africa Day. The announcement has received widespread support from across Zambia as well as Africa. Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani, a noted businessman and philanthropist from Zambia, came in full support of this decision from the Zambian President. According to Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani, death penalty is a cruel, inhumane and degrading practice and should be discarded as it holds no significance in the present society and economy. Dr. Rajan Mahtani further stated that his company Prison Fellowship will provide full legal and regulatory support towards this decision.

Dr. Rajan Mahtani, in his interview excerpt at the ‘Mast Newspaper’, stated that there are more than 300 men and women across Zambian prisons awaiting the death penalty or capital punishment. For these prisoners, every day is a punishment as they are not aware of their final day on this planet. At the same time, the condition of the majority of the maximum prisons in Zambia is dangerous and degrading. According to some past visits by vice presidents and Presidents, the condition of some of the maximum prisons can be considered as ‘hell on earth.

At the same time, there is an increasing awareness regarding abolishing the death penalty across the globe and this trend can be observed across Zambia too. As a result of the degrading conditions of the Zambian prisons, the Zambian government has collaborated with other institutions such as the Parole Board Zambia (PBZ) and Correctional Facility for strategic decongestion of prisons. As such, the recent announcement made by the Zambian President aligns with the objectives and goals of Prison Fellowship Zambia which is transforming Zambian prisoners into model citizens who are god-loving, god-fearing, and ready to act as model and respectful citizens of the nation. As such, the announcement made by the Zambian President is a step in the right direction.
